LINAK and the WEEE and RoHS directives

Press release: 8 July 2005   Print page

The deadline for WEEE and RoHS directives will be met by LINAK

Two very discussed directives from the European Union are the WEEE and RoHS directives. The WEEE (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive urges any producer of such equipment to provide information on how to reuse and treat the equipment in the best ecologically way possible. The RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive is primarily aimed at reducing and removing the hazardous substances in this equipment. The RoHS is also called the "lead free directive".

WEEE

The WEEE directive is aimed at all original equipment manufacturers. As a component and system supplier LINAK is not falling under this description. But as the LINAK products in many cases are the only EEE products in the application, we have decided to mark all LINAK equipment with the mandatory crossed out wheelie bin. The deadline for adding the bin is by 13 August 2005, which will be met by LINAK!

RoHS

The RoHS directive impacts on LINAK in a much more direct way. The following substances are banned from Electrical and Electronic Equipment, effective 1 July 2006: Lead, Hexavalent Chromium (Chrome VI), Mercury, Cadmium, Polybrominated Biphenyles (PBB), Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE).

A dedicated project group is set up, who will ensure that this deadline is met. It is however a very complex job getting an overview of the contents in all of the components, which shape an actuator system. Therefore it is not possible to produce an exact projectplan. We will be fully compliable to the RoHS directive before the deadline of 1 July 2006.

Lead free soldering

One of the really challenging parts of RoHS is lead free soldering. The technology is invented and ready to use, but does also require extra resistant materials as the process temperature is higher than traditional soldering. At the same time this technology requires special handling by the operators. Therefore all operators of LINAK are going through extensive training and will master the technology by the deadline.
